50s villa by Hans Schilling
With the conversion of a residential building in Cologne designed by architect Hans Schilling in the 1950s, the architectural firm CATALANOQUIEL has realised a practical and aesthetic solution for the preservation and modernisation of a private building from the post-war period. It was important to the client, who grew up there, to preserve the original character and architectural details.
The materiality of the floor was inspired by the desire to emphasise the flowing floor plan. This is used throughout the entire residential unit, even in the shower areas. Another important criterion was to create a reference to the existing Schilling natural stone floor, which was achieved with VIA Terrazzo N° T02160. With its ecological standards as well as its colour, materiality and value, it meets all the requirements for a reinterpretation of the former Schilling floor.
By stripping back to the statically necessary structure, it was possible to achieve a flowing and open floor plan that allows for the desire for maximum freedom and flexibility. The result is a large room with VIA terrazzo flooring, which is complemented by carefully placed islands in the form of furniture elements.
