Cement tiles - also cement mosaic tiles - for floor and wall design

Cement tiles were widely used in Europe and the Mediterranean region in the 19th century. German master builders of the Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau periods also used cement tiles to design entrances and living areas. Many of these are still preserved in their original condition today.

VIA takes up the old production tradition of cement mosaic tiles and continues it with great awareness and understanding of material and pattern.

The cement tiles are made in original material composition as in the 19th century. Honest, natural materials are used - without artificial additives.

Properties auf cement tiles

The semi-manual production makes each tile unique.

Due to this individual production, the individual tiles vary slightly in thickness and colour. The different tile thickness is compensated during installation. The colour nuances of the individual tiles create the wonderful oscillation, one of the main characteristics - because: No tile is like the other.

The cement tiles are not fired, but dried and are open-pored until after they have been impregnated and are therefore sensitive to dirt and moisture. It is therefore essential that they are stored in a dry and clean place before installation.

VIA cement tiles are produced from natural materials and - like natural stones (e.g. marble) - are sensitive to acids. Therefore, they should not be cleaned with harsh acidic household detergents. Acidic food (e.g. wine) should be removed from the tiles promptly.

Laying cement tiles

stallation of VIA cement tiles is not difficult, but it should be done carefully so that you can enjoy them for a long time.

There are a few things to consider:

VIA panels are laid mainly on cement screeds. Further information can be found in the FAQs section. Substrates based on special construction solutions must always be clarified in advance with the VIA application technology.
VIA cement tiles are laid with a very small joint width (less than 2 mm), so that the pattern is fully appreciated.

The VIA cement tiles are laid by hand using the buttering-floating method in the center bed with VIA tile adhesive. Slight differences in the height of the tiles must be compensated for. In addition, they are laid with a very small joint width.

As a jointing compound use the traditional mixture of trass cement and silica sand. These are commercially available building materials. Do not use ready-mixed joint compound, because it contains plastic particles that can settle in the still open-pored slabs, causing a gray haze on the tiles.

Impregnation of cement tiles

Impregnation of VIA cement tiles is done after grouting and is a one-time effort. You can impregnate either with the VIA tile oil or with the VIA mineral impregnation.

Impregnation with the self-hardening VIA tile oil is done after the floor is completely dry, which is after about a week. For this reason, do not clean the floor with water before impregnation, otherwise the oil will not be able to penetrate into the tile pores. The impregnation does not prevent the penetration of acidic products. Acid resistance is achieved only when the lime surface of the boards is separated from the acid by a coating.

VIA mineral impregnation based on water glass silicifies the surface of VIA cement tiles. Again, the depth of penetration is essential for a good result and the dryness of the tile surface is therefore an important prerequisite.

Impregnation is very important and indispensable. Only through impregnation the VIA cement tiles get the necessary protection.

Care of VIA cement tiles

Traditionally, VIA cement tiles are cleaned with soft soap. The VIA soft soap cares for the floor through its re-lubricating property and allows a beautiful patina to develop over time. Coarser dirt can be removed from the VIA cement tiles e.g. with a "Glitzi" sponge and ATA (cleaning agent) or also with the so-called "cleaning stone".

Preparation

The VIA cement tiles are given an additional shine by reconditioning with diamond polishing pads. In this process, differently grained polishing pads are applied in sequence with water. Please note: The floor is not sanded.
